Film Magazine - Initial Research - Task 6

Initial Ideas Research - Film Magazine

Examples of current film magazines:
  • Total Film
  • Empire
  • Best Movie
  • Entertainment Weekly
  • Filmaker

Front Cover Annotations:

The front cover includes lots of bright and eye catching colours, to draw people into buying/ viewing the magazine. It also sets the mood/ shows the style of the front shown film, displaying the genre through colour. This is attracting feature to magazines, as the colours allow for the magazine to be easy on the eye.

A character/ main character from the shown film is used to target fans of that actor and persuades them into buying/ viewing the magazine. The front cover image is the main selling point as it is the first thing the person sees. To make the main foreground image 'pop' from the background, the colours of the background after often darker or are toned down in order to illuminate the main image. The background will necessarily always follow the main image, providing a photographed scene from the film or a coloured background to connote the genre or portray well known colours linked to the character(s) or film.
Lots of writing/ brief overviews dotted across the cover are in place to constantly distract the reader, and to keep them busy, possibly persuading them into buying the magazine (if they haven't already) to read more when they have more time. Big and bold text font is used to draw eyes into front cover. The use of no 'clashing' text colours between the photographed images and magazine making it easy on the eye. This helps persuade the person into reading/ buying the magazine as they like the general appeal and presentation of the front cover, and would want to in turn view the rest of the magazine.

Interviews:

The interviews feature a well known actor/ celebrity, and do that to target that persons fan base, and in turn attract them to becoming a long term fan of the magazine.  The interview itself is often described as an "exclusive interview" to entice the reader/ person viewing the magazine through making them have an urge/ be curious to read the interview due to its exclusivity and likelihood of not being accessible anywhere but the magazine. It also helps to build their brand as having "exclusive interviews" portrays them as a popular and well credited brand through relationships with actors and directors in order to receive the opportunity to formally interview them in a one to one environment. Interviews with actors often lead to 'future lead' questions, such as their next movie or next big step in their career. If answered with a short answer, the answer would often be briefly quoted to entice the person into reading the rest of the interview to find out more, or would be titled with a question posing a rhetorical form (usually on the front cover) and be used as 'bait' to test the readers curiousity and ultimately lead them to buying/ reading the magazine.

Film Reviews:

Film reviews within a magazine are used as methods of advertisement for films, and help build good relationship with the producing company/ actors. In light of this, fans of a certain film or producing company that have a review of one of their films in a magazine will be curious to read it and see if the magazine shares an honest and fair opinion on the film. It is also important for the magazine to give an honest and non biased opinion on films they review as it shows they are a fair and honest brand, and aren't giving out biased opinions to films depending on the size of their viewing or producing company. Reviews can also stand as advertising for films as they encourage the reader to watch the film themselves in order their own view on the film.

Contests:

Contests are held within magazines as they persuade people to view the magazine as a whole based off interest in the contest. They also allow for 'audience interaction' as the contest may pose a question, that has to answered correctly in order to win. This entices people as trivial questions based on films they may enjoy keeps them occupied and in turn enters them into a prize winning opportunity. People who are viewing the magazine would note the scale of the brand through such things as exclusive interviews or popularity shown through social media (etc) and immediately link the size of the brand to the expense of the contest, which often poses holidays to tropical destinations or physical items such as vehicles or gadgets. The opportunity to win such expensive items with a free of charge entry into the contest will persuade people to enter, and keep buying the magazine for more contest with different prizes.
